If your Alabama tags are expired and you’re worried you have to renew or pay back fees before you donate, you can relax. In most Alabama donations, lapsed registration is not a problem at all. What really matters is that you have a valid Alabama title in your name. Once you sign your title over, Alabamotion picks up the vehicle at no cost and you still receive your tax receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s what actually happens with an expired-registration vehicle in Alabama. You do not need to drive it, pass inspection, or stand in line at the courthouse. We send a tow truck to your home, workplace, or storage lot anywhere from Huntsville and Madison to Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Dothan, Auburn, and the Wiregrass. After pickup, the vehicle becomes the responsibility of the charity. You should simply notify your county licensing office or the Alabama Department of Revenue of the transfer so you’re not liable going forward. We’ll walk you through the title signing for your county, whether you’re in Jefferson, Shelby, Mobile, Madison, or Baldwin County.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have the Alabama title in your name
Expired tags are usually fine, but you do need a valid Alabama certificate of title in your name (or legal heir documentation). Find the paper title, even if the car has been sitting in the driveway in Hoover or a storage lot near Decatur. If the title is missing, we’ll explain how to request a replacement from your county office.
2. Call or submit our online form with basic vehicle details
Tell us the year, make, model, approximate location, and that the registration is expired. Whether it’s non-running in Mobile, on blocks in Bessemer, or parked at an apartment in Huntsville, we’ll confirm it’s eligible, answer your Alabama-specific questions, and schedule a pickup window that fits your schedule.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in Alabama
You don’t need current tags or insurance because you don’t have to drive it. Our licensed towing partner comes to you—home, work, or storage yard—from Birmingham’s Southside to rural locations in the Black Belt. Towing is always free to you, and they’ll handle loading even if the tires are flat or the car won’t start.
4. Sign the title over to complete the donation
At pickup, you’ll sign your Alabama title over to Alabamotion following state requirements. We’ll show you exactly where to sign and what to fill in. Once the title is signed and the tow truck leaves, the vehicle responsibility shifts to the charity. Keep your copy of the tow receipt for your records and tax filing.
5. Notify Alabama DMV and receive your tax receipt
After pickup, we process the vehicle for Heritage for the Blind. You’ll receive a tax receipt—usually for at least $500, with instructions for IRS Form 1098-C if the sale amount is higher. We recommend you submit a bill of sale/transfer notice with your county licensing office or the Alabama Department of Revenue so your name is cleared from future tags and tickets.
Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name or signed over incorrectly
Tip: While expired tags are usually fine, an incorrect title can delay pickup. Make sure the listed owner is the one signing. If the owner is deceased or there’s a lien listed, tell us upfront so we can walk you through the Alabama steps for estates, lien releases, or power of attorney before we schedule the tow.
Missing or destroyed Alabama title
Tip: We can’t complete the donation with just registration papers or a bill of sale. If the title is lost, you’ll typically need a replacement from your county licensing office (like in Jefferson, Madison, or Mobile County). Call us first; we’ll explain exactly what you need to request so you don’t waste trips or fees.
Vehicle stored in a tow yard, apartment, or HOA community
Tip: If your car with expired tags is already impounded or parked where management is pressuring you, timing matters. Let us know the storage contact and any fees or deadlines. We’ll coordinate access and pickup so the tow truck can get in and out smoothly without creating issues with your landlord, HOA, or yard manager.
No keys or severely inoperable condition
Tip: You can still usually donate a vehicle that won’t start, has flat tires, or is missing keys, but we must arrange the right kind of tow. Be honest about its condition—whether it’s sunk in the backyard in Prattville or damaged from a wreck in Tuscaloosa—so we send the right equipment and avoid rescheduling.
